our palms

For FHE last night we talked about Palm Sunday.  I told Aidan (D was sleeping away his own strep & bronchitis) that Jesus entered Jerusalem to Hosanna shouts and waving palms.  A paradoxical beginning to the last week of His life (okay, so maybe those weren't the precise words I used for my 4-year-old...).  We then made our own simple palms and talked about how we can welcome Christ into our home & lives.  Do we?  My own answer is that I all-too-often become distracted with more meaningless details of daily living.  On this Easter week I especially want to make an effort to invite the Savior into our home...into my heart.  Each of us wrote on one of the palms something we plan to do this week to welcome Christ.

Aidan said he could be more kind.  So we spelled out "kind" for him to write.  He went on to proudly add the only word (excepting his name) that he can spell on his own.  No.  I'm hoping it's not linked as a negation of the "kind".  We hung the palms by our front door to Remember.  I want to make this a yearly Palm Sunday tradition...I planned it for my children, but felt its impact most profoundly for myself.

What a great family home evening and a wonderful new tradition. How blessed your children are! I was interested to see what other things were written on your and Jim's palms.

I love it! What a neat way to begin the week leading up to Easter Sunday. I especially love that your kids will look at Easter as something beyond candy. You always do a great job with that when religious holidays come. I need to jot this idea down somewhere to remember!

I think I will steal this lesson idea. I'm not doing our Easter lesson until NEXT Monday because we were doing St. Patricks Day all day, and I didn't want to start Easter until that was over. Great idea to make the tradition. Thanks for sharing.

I am so excited about this week too. After our family home evening, you could tell the girls could feel the spirit because they gave Nate and I both hugs and kisses and then wanted us to help them bear their testimonies. Isn't it fabulous to bring that into your home? Thank you for ironing out the details for this week. I think it is definitely going to be a tradition in my home as well.

Amy....
A beautiful thing to do. Gracie and the other children at church Sunday sang and waved palm branches. What a special time of year!
Hope you are all feeling much better soon!
Love,
Amy

What a great thing to do. We're having an Easter Activity for the primary kids this Friday and I'm in charge of the craft for it and we're making palm leaves like this (only covered in tissue paper). I actually like your idea of writing ways we can welcome Christ into lives better. Very cool.

This is a great idea! I always love to see what kids come up with on their own for these things. And yes, hopefully Aidan's "no" was just spelling exuberance.
