    cake at 98

My in-laws' home was brimming with party-goers tonight.  All celebrating this woman turning 98.

I can't even pretend I knew more than a handful of the guests, but one older gentlemen had me giggling as he looked at the birthday cake and proclaimed, "She's older than dirt."   He then eyed me as though it was no laughing matter, and continued..."Well, she's older than Arizona."

And that gave me pause.  Grandma Scott is two years older than Arizona.  And two years shy of a century.  And I do believe that does deserve far more than a pause.

I loved making this cake.  Simply put, it felt creative and fun.  Grandma is a crochet-a-holic whiz.  Seriously.  Her work is so lovely, and we've been lucky enough to collect a few pieces over the years.  Click here to see my favorite. . . the piece that inspired the cake.

It will require some pause for thought to come up with a cake for 100.  And Arizona's big 100 will be fast on Grandma's heels...I'm quite sure that deserves celebration in cake as well.

That cake is insane,I don't know how you ever come up with these amazing creations! I think you also stole some of the talent in the family that should have been mine, since I so lack in most areas. I told Shane that you were going to come up with some projects for us to work on , I am so excited.

    The cake is marvelous.

Your talent is remarkable. I just can't get over the crochet on the cake! Absolutely incredible.

And my kids loved (completely snarfed the whole thing!) having a taste.

Your skills with fondant are fabulous...you totally saved me tonight. Brilliant. I will post a picture of mine tomorrow...thank you, thank you, thank you for being there for me on this Friday night and many, many other nights as well. I would be in a heap of tears without you and your mamacita!

Oh my goodness! This cake is incredible. The little details in the yarn label are wonderful. How on earth did you make that afghan?? I am beyond amazed at your talent. Grandma Scott must have loved it. Happy Birthday, indeed!

Amy your cake is just wonderful. I was trying to come up with some different words that had been used because it deserves it's own word. You do such a great job and I'll bet it totally impressed Grandma Scott and Kay and the rest of the crew. You do awesome work. Eloise

I'm stunned by the cake, I'll call to get all the details. I've never thought of how old Arizona is, but that's amazing that she's older. Wow.

That did turn out great - too bad I didn't get to come see it in person. That is very interesting that she's older than Arizona -- not many people can claim that!

I actually thought it was a package of yarn on top of the cake. When I clicked it and made it bigger and saw it was fondant I nearly died. Very good job! Oh my!

Simply stunning cake. I just keep staring at it.
I can't wait to see the 100th. It isn't everyone that gets to decorate one of those.

It only takes creativity & patience, Jamie. Fondant is a little like playing with play dough...you can form whatever you can imagine, it sometimes just takes a little time. I'm dying to take a class at Michael's, but just haven't found time yet. I imagine that's a good place to start for basics as well.
