    fishing

Shane's parents have a "farm" about an hour from Cedar where there is a pond stocked with fish.  So we headed there on Saturday night with poles & hooks.  Aidan has been begging to fish for ages now, so it was fun to see his excitement.

But it was equally funny to see that same excitement wane as he saw how honestly unexciting fishing can be.  He sat with Dad for a while, but by the time Jim was getting bites a half hour later, A wanted nothing to do with reeling in the fish.  Instead, he became a glad party to this melee:

The fishing was catch & release, but one lucky fish met Baylee.  And she must have given the poor thing a heart attack by chasing all the squealing boys away with it in her firm grasp.  He died quickly, I'm sure.   My own boys were highly delighted with the dead fish that Baylee decided to keep as a pet.  Pretty disgusting, but I guess they wouldn't really be normal little boys if they didn't want to hold (or in D's case, kiss) a dead fish. Or so I tell myself.

Our fishing experience was about the same. Total excitement until they realize you have to sit and wait. They get easily distracted.

Love that he is kissing the fish! Maybe Wyatt is not so normal because he runs from them!

Carter, who is almost 4, has great patience for fishing. He will stick it out for hours with Dad, patiently casting and creeling is own fishing pole. (Yes, he has his own, and yes, he can cast and creel by himself. He is truely his father's son). I love watching them fish together. It is very special Daddy-son time.

Aimee, however, always wants to go too. But as soon as she's been there long enough to get the line baited she is done. She was actually very distraught when Dad cut up a worm and put it on the hook. "Don't hurt worm Daddy! Fix it! Fix it!"

I'm reminded of another poem about snakes and snails and puppy dog tails. The list could really be so much longer, couldn't it? Dead fish definately belong in there.

I have a picture of my then 11-year-old nephew 2 years ago kissing a fish they had brought in from the lake. Disgusting. But then last year, Alexis held her fish to pose for a picture. Oh please don't tell me someday she'll succumb to the kiss.
