fall break: day three

We make pumpkin-ish sugar cookies.  Every year.  Like since I was 12.  And my sisters who live in other states will call mid-October to ask if I've made my cookies yet, or to say they're in the midst of theirs.  It's a connection across both miles & years.  Mandi and I started our baking today with the intention of letting the kids help decorate (by making chocolate chip faces, that is...no kids frost cookies in my world).  But they were outside playing so well that we just plowed through on our own.

For lunch, the plan was to break this roasted chicken down for sandwiches, but we decided a free for all on Mandi's back porch picnic table would be just as good.

Zero complaints from these four barbarians.

Mandi simply hosed off their greasy fingers as they finished.

And cookies were had by all.  (after licking off a layer of frosting, of course)

Yum- we made pumpkin sugar cookies this last weekend. Love the picture of Aiden with the chicken bone!

What a good tradition to connect you all...simple, doable and delicious.

You have such an eye for photos, Amy. I love seeing things through your eyes.

I guess you'll have to adopt me as a sister--we make the same pumpkin sugar cookies every year, as well. Except--not with those cute green tops and tendrils--those are a great idea!

Wow, you can tell those are my pictures and not yours just by the quality! Seeing them that large really shows it. You are good at deciding on just a few. . . I can't resist and have to put almost every dang picture on my blog. I'm just not a decision-maker like you.

Your cookies look divine. I loved the comment about no children frosting cookies in your world. So funny.

The barbarian photos cracked me up!

I make pumpkin sugar cookies too. It's my own tradition, one year I just decided it seemed like the thing to do. It felt like tradition even that first time.

You inspire me...I'm a drop cookie girl myself. It's always a real act of love to make frosting in my world.

What a wonderful tradition! I think perhaps I will start that one up here. Who doesn't love a reason to make frosted sugar cookies?

Sugar cookies are so much work. They are a holiday-only treat around here. I never make them just because they taste good. It has to be Christmas, Valentines, Easter, or Halloween. On a VERY rare occation I will make clovers for St. Pats. Yours look beautiful. I love the swirly vine detail. So Amy!

Those cookies look sooo good! I think I will have to break out the cookie cutters. It was so fun to see you today! I wish we could have visited more. Can we plan a day, and go to lunch?

Every year my family makes Witches' Brew for Halloween dinner. I know my sister, sister in law and all my nieces, even the single one in college, will be making a pot of soup that night. I'm sure my nephew's new wife will have to make some as well. I love traditions that connect us all together. The only cookies my kids frost are the 3 left at the end that only they will eat!
