52 Blessings

Week 4: President Hinckley
"Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he's been robbed. The fact is that most putts don't drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just ordinary people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. . . Life is like an old-time rail journey--delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride."
On one of our first dates (do you remember sitting there at Freestone Park?), Jim told me this was his favorite quote by President Hinckley. It's something I've always remembered and loved for its down-to-earth truth.
It's not often that someone you haven't met in person impacts your life so personally. Yet I'm sure there are millions who could claim that with Gordon B. Hinckley. His testimony, his optimism, his humor, his example, have each profoundly changed my life. When I heard of his passing this evening my first inclination was to kneel in prayer of Gratitude. His influence has been one of those "beautiful vistas" that I will not forget.
