a great day to clean my desk

My computer died last night.  I was in the office one minute typing (writing a post about the pledge of allegiance, for crying out loud!), left, came back to Blank a half hour later.  I honestly felt naked or limbless sitting there without it...crazy how it has become as essential as my hands or feet (or so it seems...).   Jim sat at his desk on his computer and I was an envious green.  First reaction was hot red anger, but sullen blue remains.  Building a second computer changed our lives a few years ago.  We both are people who need computer time.

I plan there - weekly dinner lists, daily to-do lists, home improvement lists, self-improvement lists, herb garden lists, FHE lists...

I escape there.  I know that you can rent a villa in Spain for $800/week.  It has a lovely pool.  I know where to find ratings for potential purchases. Hence, my well-loved Dyson.  I know where to look for book reviews.  I know where to find plans for house dreaming.

Yes, the "escape" can still be done on "the other" computer, but it's just not the same.  Jim's computer is for sports stats & Everquest.  A different world entirely.  And what will we do if we can't sit desk-to-desk in the same room playing Settlers of Catan online? So what if that only happens every six months...at least it's an option.  And sitting side-by-side in separate worlds...not an option anymore.

So this morning I've bookmarked 7 different wedding cake plateaus on "the other" computer...the poor things are out of place amid "the other" chosen favorites:  NFL Draft Countdown, ASU Sun Devils, Radio-Controlled Flight, Everquest 2 Realm, Steak: Grilling Perfection...

Going back to *shared* doesn't sound possible, so I'm hoping it's an easy fix.  Sigh.  And all my recipe, FHE, & writing files aren't reachable.  Jim assured me they will be easily salvaged, but being without for even a day seems hard.  What if I want to make Kay's donuts or Becca's mac  & cheese?  I don't, but I'd really like to know that it's an option.

I'm so sorry to hear this! Sharing is hard to go back to, but having your precious files in limbo would be even harder. I love the idea of your wedding cake sites mingling with Jim's sports and steak, though. And, you are my new travel agent.

I'm sorry about your computer. I hope it is a quick fix for you. I could not function without mine. Josh and I each have our own. His is full of stupid boy stuff-computer games, sports stuff. Mine is full of scrapbooking, cooking, shopping, etc. We are content on our own and I'm not sure how well we would share. It's nice having your own "space."

How sad! I am hoping my husband will soon tire of my computer monopoly and buy me a mac laptop like I want. But I know what you mean. I refuse to get online on his username. I need my bookmarks! I don't want to see all that crap he's got on his :).
I supposed that's what you get for being patriotic. Maybe you should be more American: never vote but complain about the politicians who are in power:). I'm actually interested to read what you had to say about the pledge of alliance. Hopefully you still post it.

Thanks for the laugh, I'm glad I'm not the only one who needs to know that I can access things at the drop of a hat even though I have no intention of using them any time soon! Hope it can be fixed quick!

I am so sorry. My husband and I both have separate computers (laptops that sit side by side). I don't know how we would handle it if we had to share.

Hope you are able to fix the problem.

Sorry, Amy, I know that is your escape. I guess you'll have to start watching more tv or reading. That's my new dream - to get a laptop and have it for myself. It would be especially nice since I'm now doing online classes and could do them while in the same room with the girlies (rather than stuck in the study). Luckily your Code Red is a smart computer guy and will (hopefully) take care of you quickly and efficiently (are you reading, Code Red? hint...hint)

Thats the worst. I totally feel your pain. My husbands computer is sports galore too. Unfortunately it is a work computer and he has to return it soon. I hope you can get your personal stuff off soon and your own computer fixed.

It's upsetting to me that the computer dying is even a possibility. We don't have two computers so I'd be completely lost without this one. Your post cracked me up, and my eyes lit up when I read the word Dyson. I long for a Dyson.

Computer time is such an escape for me as well. No matter what...internet, photos, design etc. I love it all. I'm so sorry your having computer problems. Lucky for us we have back up as well. I hope you're able to get the one fix asap because I know a computer is nice, but it's just not the same as your own.

Salvation! Jim came home with a new power supply & I'm back in business...and the boy did that without even reading my nagging blog today! How lucky am I?!

I am not even remotely one for vigiliance on home improvement problems, but when my computer doesn't work it really bothers me. I figured you would feel the same and would want it back soon so this became a code red emergency. I think from reading this it might have needed to be an even higher priorty. Although not sure where to get a power supply at 11 pm oh well guess we need to add that to an emergency preparedness list. Then if we could only get code red in 55 gallon drums.

This may seem frivilous, but code red mentioned emergency preparedness list, and I thought of updating my supplies, and I realized, to my great horror and chagrin, that chocolate headed the list. Kill me now!
