    baby shower cake

Cyndee colored my purple and green fondant on Friday.  My color gels are getting low and there was zero store trip energy left, so she mixed the colors herself from the basics.  I love having an artist mom whose skills can be put to good use!  The picture's lighting is rather poor so the green really doesn't look so hot...but it was my favorite in person.

With the colors mixed by other hands, this cake was fun to put together.  I love the clean lines of fondant (and the fact that no icing bags have to fill my sink in the aftermath). The bottom layer is 8"...the top 4"...so this was a petite 3-tier.

Something I learned about fondant this time around:  The fondant decorations (balls, circles, bow) keep a nice shine when you brush them lightly with vegetable oil or shortening (I simply used a small paintbrush, dipping sparingly).  It really added vibrance to the cake.

It's so small and cute and wonderful. I want one just like it! Good work, our mom is handy when it comes to the whole artistry thing.

Clean lines--love it! Beautiful gem of a cake.

I've never ever tried fondant. It seems like a mystery to me. If I see enough of your beautiful pictures maybe I'll get brave. (And thanks for posting your frosting/fondant recipes on b,l,&d a bit ago!)

I loved this! I emailed it to a friend who is planning a polka-dot birthday party for her little girl. You are an inspiration indeed.

You and your mom make quite a duo.

Not enough energy for the store, but enough for a three-layer fantasy cake featuring multi-colored fondant. (Which is smooth and perfect by the way.) You amaze me!

That is amazing! I am Marie's best friend and she told me to check out this cake. I am the one throwing a polka dot birthday party for my 6 year old. What are the dimensions of the middle cake and how many layers does each tier have. Thanks for the oil tip! I know mine won't look anything like this, but if you check my blog after Sept. 25, you'll probably see something like it. ( I know it's 6 months away, but I like getting my planning done ahead of time or it just doesn't get done).

I'm thinking the same thing as April -- no energy for the store, but energy to create this masterpiece? Amazing! I do know, though, that doing something you love can really energize!

It's just so cute. I love love love it. And I have a major sweet tooth right now, so it's looking especially tasty.

Thanks Amy for the info. PS. I love all your cakes. I was also wondering how you got his blog. My blog only lets me post little pictures, but I've always wanted big pictures like yours.

    Thanks, Nichole
