shakin' it up

The year supply, that is.   And quite literally.  I (with lots of little hand help) canned 17 lbs. of butter today.  The little hands were very welcome because the last part of the instructions is: "shake cans every five minutes for three hours", which easily stretched into four (and one stubborn batch even made it to five!).  Shake and shake and shake on down the line.  It's a task that holds far more glamour at 4 than thirty plus 4.  Still.  My rows of yellow do have me smiling.  They will be a welcome delight should disaster strike.  Because I'd be hard pressed to live without "the real thing".

I thought of you all yesterday afternoon, wondering how that butter shaking was going down. Who knew you could can butter? All I can say is, though, I am supremely glad you didn't can any cheese. :)

Your butter looks lovely. I can't wait to live by you and can as well. I thought you were doing 25 pounds? Too lofty a goal? When we all run out of food I'm coming to your house and making cookies. Can we can chocolate?

As soon as I figure out HOW you did this, I'm so going to do this myself. You are brilliant, you know.

Way to go.

I've never canned butter. and found this so interesting as my mother did once and it separated. Who knew we needed to shake it.

I love your labels.

Who knew? How did you do it?

Amazing! So are you actually going to tell us how to do this? (Or is it at BL&D?) Good job!

I think that shaking would get to me after the first half hour.

Now that's something I haven't thought of or ever seen in someone's food storage, yet I would definitely miss it if we had to go without.

We had a Stake Canning morning last Saturday where specialists taught all sorts of crazy things and I got all sorts of crazy inspired. So I bought cans & butter (thank you Fry's for the insane sale!) & thought I better run with it while the desire was strong.

I'll post instructions on Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner sometime this week. I opened a can today & it's not quite as creamy as normal butter, but definitely not grainy or horrible.

I'm beyond impressed! I didn't even know one could can butter... so many things for me to learn!

Hang on, now. I had no idea you could can butter! And I would most definitely not want to be without it -- that would make any disaster seem even worse.

I just knew we were kindred spirits.

I expect a full tutorial. Now that is impressive! I don't think I could live without the yellow stuff either.

I love your picture and can't wait to do mine, but something keeps coming up everyday this week. Tomorrow is my plan for sure. I may have to steal some of your cute labels. And when do you want to do flavored ones? Let's do those together!

Fascinating. Will you post the recipe on breakfast, lunch, and dinner?

I had no idea. NO idea that you could can butter. That is brilliant, as of course, should disaster strike and you have to live out of the food storage, I'm sure butter is something I would most certainly want. You amaze me.

The labels are adorable.

I'm with Barb; can you post the recipe?
